Clos du Val has been one of the biggest under achievers in Napa. They are in Stags Leap District and own some of the finest vineyards in Stags Leap and Clos du Val’s Yountville’s State Lane Vineyard. Whenever I am in Napa and drive past their Winery and I look at their neighbors and the kind of quality they are producing, Signorello on one side and Chimney Rock on the other with Malk and Shafer up the road. I always wonder why they don’t make better wine and wow they really could if…… .

That time has come, they finally got tired of selling their grapes to others who made $100 killer Cabs that get huge accolades. They hired Jon-Mark Chappellet from Chappellet. They hired Ted Henry from Jarvis to be head winemaker and they hired Tony Biagi as consulting winemaker, has been the winemaker for some of the recent greats that have come out of Napa, PlumpJack, Cade and Hourglass. They are now just making one great Cabernet called the Estate Cabernet that is 75% Stags Leap and 25% Yountville and with the new team in charge the results are superb.

I just tasted the 2014 Clos du Val Estate Cabernet and the wine is glorious, much richer and rounder, more concentration with great purity, balance and complexity that you get from the great Stags Leap Cabs. Stags Leap is the fountain head of Napa Cabs with a Stags Leap Cab winning the famous 1976 Paris Tasting that started this stage of Napa and Cabernet world dominance. The wine is extremely fairly priced and I strongly recommend. Clos du Val is on the rise and this wine is a buy!
