Hurricanes are unpredictable and can have devastating effects on communities. For those affected by Hurricane Helene, having access to reliable information and resources is crucial. Drawing from personal experiences with hurricanes, including the infamous Hurricane Katrina, the importance of disseminating accurate information cannot be overstated.

Hurricane Helene has left many in its wake grappling with loss, displacement, and uncertainty. While the storm may have passed, the aftermath can be overwhelming, especially for those living in mountainous areas who may be more isolated from immediate assistance.

I started out by making a social media post, hoping to gather insights from others in the comments. However, as I scrolled through my feed, I came across even more helpful resources that I thought would be great to compile in one place. Being from Southern Louisiana and having experienced hurricanes like Katrina, I know how crucial it is to share information during these times. Although I'm not nearby, I genuinely hope this information reaches anyone who might need it—even if it's just one person.

If you have additional resources to share, please feel free to comment or send me an email, and I'll add them to the list. I’d also appreciate it if you could comment on the social media post (this one on Facebook and this one on Instagram) and share this page. I'm pulling together the information shared on social media to make it more accessible. Let’s work together to ensure everyone gets the help they need. This hurricane has been devastating for many, especially those in the mountainous areas.

ATTENTION WEST NC: I'm seeing posts (not sure if it's accurate) that providers have enabled "disaster roaming." Regardless of what service a person has, if they are in an area with ANY functional network, they will be able to make calls or send text messages. To do this, go to your settings, then connections, under mobile network settings make sure roaming is enabled.

FREE Therapy Offer for Linemen and First Responders:

From Armor Up WV on Facebook:  After speaking with NC first responders this morning, we want to take a moment to speak to the lineman there. We are told the lineman are going into areas the first responders haven’t made it to yet as these lineman are trying to get the power up as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, with the lineman being first in to these areas, they are finding things that no one should have to see. As they experience these traumatic moments of finding people’s loved ones washed out into these remote areas, we want to extend a hand to them.

We find therapists and resources for first responders with heavy trauma. To our lineman and workers in NC experiencing what our first responders face, please know that we will also help you find resources. It may be today or it may be six months from now when you notice the trauma showing up as sleepless nights, anger, isolation, etc. Just know that whether it is today, tomorrow, or next year, we would be honored to find you the care you need to process this.

You can email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or message us here and a team member will respond. Our thoughts and prayers are with those in these devastated areas

FAQs on Hurricane Helene Resources

1. What should individuals do immediately after Hurricane Helene passes?

Individuals should ensure their safety first. They should avoid flooded areas, stay indoors until authorities declare it safe to go outside, and check for updates from local emergency management agencies. It’s crucial to assess property damage and document it for insurance claims.

2. How can individuals access emergency shelters?

Emergency shelters are typically set up by organizations such as the American Red Cross. Individuals can find information about nearby shelters by visiting the Red Cross website or by contacting local emergency management agencies. Local community centers and churches may also open their doors to provide refuge.

3. Where can people find food and water assistance?

Food banks and emergency food distribution centers are valuable resources for those in need. Organizations like Feeding America operate local chapters that can help individuals access food assistance. Local government agencies often set up emergency food distribution points following a hurricane, and individuals can check local news outlets for updates on their locations.

4. What types of financial assistance are available?

Financial assistance may be available through FEMA, which provides grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and other disaster-related expenses.
