As a homeschooling mom, I am always looking for fun and educational games for my children. One thing I wish I had learned more about in school when I was younger is finances. So for me, I try to incorporate finance games and such into our everyday life to help ensure my kids get at least some basic knowledge on the subject.

 

One thing I found lately that has been a hit with my children is a website that offers FREE Financial Online Games For Kids. They offer games in the following categories: 

 

For our purposes, the money games were more up our aisle of what I am working on with my youngest child. So we played a few games in that category. 

 

 

One of the games we tried and really liked was Grocery Cashier. 

 

Grocery Cashier is a game where younger children can practice addition and subtraction along with monetary familiarity by operating a virtual cash register. This is super easy to do. You can either use the mouse to click the numbers or click by using the number pad on your keyboard. Groceries will come down the conveyer belt and you enter in their cost and add it all up. The customer pays and you have to give back the correct amount of change. 

 

Each customer represents another level of the game. As you play longer the number of items you ring up increases while the time limit for each customer decreases.

 

 

Another game that worked well for my son was Treze Coins. 

 

Treze Coins is a simple money addition game where children add together coins to deposit into a gumball machine. This one is more for real beginners with money, or in our case, to help with paying attention and following directions. While this game doesn't have many instructions to follow, the fact that he has to pay attention to putting in the correct amount of coins for a gumball helps with that skill of paying attention and correctly counting money that we are working on.

 

Getting started with this game is easy. First, you choose which language you would like to play in based on country flags which are frequently associated with popular languages. Options include English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and French. Next, select which coin denominations you would like to use. Your options are: either 1, 1 and 10, or 1 and 5 and 10. Once the game loads, look at the amount shown at the top center of the screen and click on coins from the bottom area to insert coins which sum to that amount. When you have added up the correct number of coins click on the gumball machine to insert the coins.

 

Of course, these are only two out of all the games this website offers! Literally, just click one of the categories and a whole list of games appear along with the instructions for each game. Being a homeschool mom I love this! These games actually hold my child's attention. So he has fun while improving his math skills. I love the fact that the games go beyond just basic addition and subtraction, too! They're games for actual every day math and are even useful for adults trying to improve their education and skills.
