I pulled my daughter, Sophia, out of public school after her pre-school year because I was not happy with the system. Instead of complaining, I took action and enrolled her in homeschooling and have been doing it ever since. It has its good days and bad days, like everything else, but overall, it`s the best solution for our family. I’m not into spending hundreds on a curriculum right now. Instead, I’d rather grab free worksheets and things to help her catch up and then worry about her curriculum later on. This means I’ve done a lot of searching for a free homeschool curriculum.
If you’re here, I’m guessing you have too. So to save you time, I’ve compiled this HUGE list of FREE homeschool curriculum. They’re all packed with the things you’ll need to help teach your kids! If you happen to find one that isn’t valid any longer, please leave me a comment and let me know.
Here`s the list of Free Homeschool Resources:
We use these curriculums for our daughter. He has several and offers the entire Life Science curriculum totally free so that you can check them out. I highly recommend them for folks looking for a secular curriculum. He keeps them incredibly affordable as well. Each one after the Life Science is priced around $50.00. You can’t beat that for a curriculum option written by a Science teacher.

10 Tips for Homeschooling on a Budget
#1. Curriculum share
Team up with other homeschooling parents to share the cost of a certain curriculum. Sharing curriculum can help save lots of money overtime. This works best if you choose to share curriculum with students who are about the same age as yours. There are online groups to help you out if you don’t have a local curriculum share group, sites like
Homeschool Buyers Co-Op.
#2. Use the Internet
Not everything you use in your homeschooling curriculum has to be printed. Feel free to use the Internet to fill curriculum gaps. You can use Pinterest for ideas or just spend time Googling ideas that will work for your students. YouTube has a wealth of homeschool videos to complement any subject! #3. Trade curriculum
There are tons of online trading groups on Facebook where you can trade your current curriculum for what you need for future use.
#4. Go eBay style
There are still tons of curriculum choices to be purchased through eBay. We go to the curriculum fairs and make lists of what we want to use them come home and check eBay and the Facebook homeschool selling groups.
#5. Create your own
If you have the time, then consider creating your own homeschooling curriculum. This is a great idea, especially if you plan on homeschooling, multiple children. I put together my own unit studies on subjects my kids are wanting to learn at the time. Their favorites so far have been dinosaurs and the Solar System.
#6. Always buy used
I understand that sometimes you cannot always find used homeschooling items that you want to use. However, it’s wise to buy used as often as you can.
#7. Take care of your items
The items you use for homeschooling will last longer the better they are taken care of. Make sure you take care of your items to the best of your ability and encourage your students to do the same. I laminate anything I can, anything I plan to use over and over that doesn’t require writing on.
#8. Attend a CO-OP
So many positive stories have come from homeschooling co-ops. It’s a great way to meet new people and save money on part of your homeschooling fees. Attending a CO-OP means you get the opportunity to give your time and knowledge in exchange for someone else giving theirs. Your kids can benefit greatly from a homeschool co-op (so can mom and dad). This is particularly great if you have a subject you are weak in, for me it’s math. As we get into Algebra and above my kids can get help from someone who is good at math and I help in my strong points, like history.
#9. Plan ahead
Anytime you do not plan for the future, you’re going to spend more money. Always map out your homeschooling plan to know exactly what’s going to happen down the road. I started the beginning of this school year off knowing what I wanted to buy for NEXT school year so I could start buying as I saw deals, as I found the stuff being sold on the Facebook groups etc. This allows me to get great deals and not have to scramble over the summer to find things.
#10. Get creative
Having a budget is one thing, but don’t be afraid to be creative with your homeschooling budget. Think about the long run and what you can do to make your homeschooling budget last for years to come. The expenses of homeschooling do add up, but if you’re smart about it, you can stretch your resources.
Ways to Score Free & Cheap Homeschooling Curriculum
If you`re asking “Where can I find cheap curriculum?” or “Where did you get freebies?” you`re in the right place!
Ask Your Local School System:
There are several places within your local public school system to inquire about FREE curriculum.
- The public school board receives free samples from curriculum companies each year. Homeschool offices set these samples aside for homeschooling families to enjoy once they are no longer using them. (If they don’t already do this, ask them to!)
- Your school board maintenance department often stores previously used school books they collected to be disposed of. Sometimes these books are stored in warehouses for a time before they are tossed. Call and ask!
- Everyone knows a teacher. Ask if they have anything they are no longer using. Often you can get partially used student workbooks, reproducibles they are no longer using from a previous curriculum, or even, classroom decorations they need to rotate out of their collection!
Ask at Church:
- Just as your favorite school teacher has a stash, so do Sunday School leaders at Church. There, you are likely to find previous curriculum, classroom decorations, VBS leftovers, and a bunch more. These leftovers can be incorporated into several lessons at home.
- Inquire within Small Groups: You are likely to find other homeschooling families within your church small groups. Let them know what you are looking for.
Freebies:
- Many companies offer a free sample of their curriculum. Request samples on forms found their website or by shooting them an email. For those who are just beginning their homeschooling journey, these freebies can BE your curriculum if you request enough of them. By the end of your first year, you will know more about what works for your family than those who have bought them all!
- Homeschool Conventions and Fairs – bring yourself an empty bag! You are going to need it! Everyone has samples or favors to give and all you need to do is take a look at what they have to offer. With everything in one place, this is a frugal mom’s dream come true!
- Free Printables! The web is full of blogs and companies that are offering free printable packages. This is a great thing for you because you can be selective and get what you need from almost anywhere! (If you find yourself becoming a printables junkie, I recommend a toner printer)
Sales, Sales, Sales:
- When I started homeschooling, yard/garage sales were my favorite places to find inexpensive curriculum and educational toys. You can easily find previously used textbooks that can be adapted for your homeschool use.
- Thrift Stores, especially Christian thrift stores, are great places to find use homeschool curriculum on the cheap.
- Homeschooling Groups host curriculum swaps one-two times each year. Many have a “Free” table for those who are looking to be exceptionally frugal.
- Stalking your favorite curriculum company will allow you to learn about the best deals and the best time to buy. My favorite educational toy and teacher supply store often marks down their products dramatically low – that’s when I buy!
- Educents is one of my favorite online Homeschool Sale Sites! Sign up is free and I recommend it to get their new deal emails!
Giveaways:
- All summer long homeschooling blogs will be hosting giveaways for your favorite curriculum companies. Everything from the inexpensive to the dream packages will be given away! Enter them! Someone has to win, it could be you!
