It took a while for Joseph Heller, who was born on this day in 1923, to settle on the title for Catch-22. Though it was originally published as Catch-18, Heller's publisher worried it could be confused with the WWII novel Mila 18. Other numbers were considered: Catch-11 sounded too similar to Ocean's 11; Catch-17 sounded too much like Billy Wilder's Stalag 17; and Catch-14 apparently didn't sound funny enough. Finally, Catch-22 was deemed just right.
