Okay, we'll be the first to admit it: Going to the gym can be a hassle. Between making time for it with a busy schedule, to doing the grunt work while there, it isn't exactly everyone's version of fun. So, for those of you who roll your eyes at workout videos, scuff at the runners outside your window, or genuinely just hate doing anything more than walk...this post is for you.
Today we've dedicated time to describe ways you can keep up with a healthy lifestyle, and stay minimally active (heart health, you know?) without getting a gym membership.
If you're ready to do that, read on...
1) Eat Better.
The first place to start is with your diet. If you aren't working out, then you should at least be eating right. Keep your plate well portioned, and in line with dietary guidelines. If you find yourself eating a lot of junk food, that's one area you should improve. It should be noted that to keep within a healthy weight range, you shouldn't consume more calories than your body can burn.
Quick tip: Your body burns calories naturally each day, eating within the amount it burns will keep you in check. If you eat 3600 calories, when you only burn 1800 calories a day, you can bet you'll gain weight.
2) Go For Walks
If treadmill running isn't for you, and fitness classes make you cringe, then try going for walks. Getting in enough steps daily is just as effective as sweating it out. Plus, the scenery is great, and nature has its own benefits.
3) Drink More Water
Water is fundamental to all life functions. If you are not hydrated, such functions can get a little wonky. Make sure that throughout the day you are drinking enough water to support your body. Instead of sipping a soda at lunch, order water with lemon. One small trick to boost your intake, and help get things moving inside of you.
4) Keep A Journal
Stop mindlessly eating. Start journaling. Keeping track of what you've eaten throughout the day helps you reevaluate your choices at the end of the week so you can make healthier adjustments the coming week. Splurged on that Brownie-Ala-Mode on Tuesdayfollowed by a Double Stack Burger on Wednesday? Scale back and replace your unhealthy cravings with alternatives; pineapple with whipped cream, or a lean meat wrap. Life is balance, journaling uncovers what's out of whack.
5) Meal Sub With Smoothies
...And the best place to start is with breakfast. Forget that grab-and-go nonsense sandwich from the deli or starbucks, blend up a smoothie that provides your body with nutrients it needs to carry on awesomely.
