The Ultimate Guide to Senior Citizen Discounts and Savings in 2023

Enjoy your golden years while saving!

Senior citizens make up a large portion of the population and many discounts and free services are available to them. Many businesses provide special discounts to customers over a certain age. You may be surprised to learn that some senior discounts are available long before you reach the age of 65, as not all businesses classify senior citizens in the same way. Sometimes seniors can even get discounts for things like health care, prescriptions, food, recreation, and travel.

Ready to start saving money on your favorite leisure activities, restaurants, and grocery stores, among other things? I compiled a list of discounts for you to take advantage of!

As always these discounts may vary and may not be available at all locations.  You also must ASK for your discount and you also may be asked for proof of age. With that being said, enjoy your new found savings!

Jump Ahead!

What Are Senior Discounts?

Senior discounts are an excellent way to stay within your budget while reaping the benefits of being an older adult. Keep in mind that senior discounts are not required by law, so it pays to ask before you buy. If you can think of something, there might be a discount for it!

How Old Do You Have to Be to Receive a Senior Discount?

While the official age to claim Medicare is 65, many senior benefits and discounts begin considerably earlier! If you join AARP or the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC) on your 50th birthday, you'll get a head start in taking advantage of senior discounts. The minimum age requirements for all other discounts vary depending on the employer or region and might range from 50 to 65 years of age.

Not sure if you're eligible for a senior discount? Please do not be afraid to inquire! While not all establishments advertise their senior discounts, a little detective effort may be required.

BONUS: Check out these current offers for senior citizens while you are here and save some money!

While not all businesses provide a designated senior discount, many do offer significant savings through some kind of retail loyalty program or other incentives.

How to Get Senior Discounts

While senior discounts aren't usually publicized, the best thing you can do is inquire about special discounts for seniors. Don't be hesitant to call a business ahead or inquire in person! You might find bargains from companies that aren't mentioned here. You didn't realize how many discounts you can get until you ask, which indicates you can miss out on some excellent offers.

Apart from that, most stores merely ask for your ID (or your AARP card) to be qualified for senior discounts. If you place an online order, you may need to provide additional proof of age, such as AARP membership information, or show your ID when picking up goods.

Some stores may restrict what you may buy or when you can buy it. Restaurants may require you to purchase from a specific menu, generally with smaller servings, in order to receive senior discounts. Several stores give senior discounts on specified days, so it's a smart idea to conduct your shopping on that day. To qualify for senior discounts on travel, you may need to book specified dates.

Discounts can also vary by region, especially with major franchises, where senior discounts are frequently at the discretion of local management. This is frequent in restaurants and fast food establishments, where menus can differ greatly between locations. Before you buy, always inquire about what discounts are available because they might change.

Senior Discounts are Disappearing

Senior Citizen discounts have grown less attractive in recent years. Southwest Airlines, Verizon Wireless, Rite Aid, Kroger, Albertsons, and many more companies have terminated or decreased senior discounts in the past few years, making it even more essential for seniors to look for and take advantage of bargains while they are accessible.

Travel bargains are one segment where seniors can still discover a variety of excellent options. Seniors may almost always get discounts on hotels and rental vehicles (up to 30% off), as well as special deals on travel and cruises. Just double-check the rates, because we've encountered senior fares that aren't the best value.
