With public gyms being closed now for social distancing, most people have fully adapted to a WFH (Workout from Home) exercise routine.

While many can't wait to return to their old routines, others suggest this new form of exercise has paved the way for the future of fitness.

Remote exercising offers a huge opportunity with untapped potential. The rapid advancement of technology and sports nutrition has allowed for a brand new perspective to emerge. Below are some of the pros and cons of this new phenomenon.

Pros:

More Privacy: Ever feel like you're more focused when no one is watching? It could be difficult to concentrate on form and execution if you're anxious about others judging you. The privacy of your own home will grant you the confidence to try anything.

Less Contact: You're less prone to catching germs when you're using your own equipment. At home, there is less reason to worry about sanitary issues. You can also avoid all of those awkward conversations that may have taken up much of your exercise time.

Faster Workouts: Think of all the additional time that a gym visit costs you. Commuting to the gym, sharing equipment and various distractions all add up. You can get so much more benefit from your workouts without interruption and downtime.

Affordability: The monthly expense of a gym membership really adds up over time. Especially premium memberships with multiple amenities. If you weren’t utilizing these amenities, it’s time to question whether the expense was worth the price.

Endless Resources: There are countless ways to stream videos online and through apps. The community of online fitness is rapidly growing every day. Whether you like Pilates, Yoga, HIIT workouts, Barre or Spin Class, there are resources for every style of exercise.

Cons:

Technological Limitations: Not everybody has the most optimal setup for virtual adaptation. Without a smartphone or smart tv, you may be limited in your access to fitness material. Also, your quality of internet connection may prevent you from watching live videos or downloading apps.

Less Personal Instruction: Personal instruction is crucial for form development, especially for beginners. It may be difficult for visual learners to get the same benefit from video instruction.

Less Team Atmosphere: Most gyms were designed to motivate customers to get their very best effort. Whether it's a workout buddy, personal trainer, or group class, that element of comraderyis lost when exercising independently.

Equipment Limitations: This is the greatest pitfall working out from home. It's nearly impossible to access the same equipment you have at the gym. Most people don't have the space nor the budget to build a home setup that is nearly as professional.

What's to Come?

We have just seen the beginning of virtual fitness. There is so much more to come along with the evolution of technology. Already, there is all-in-one fitness equipment that can simulate thousands of scenarios.

Communication across platforms has become so seamless, making it convenient to connect with anyone in the world and access infinite information.

This technology has evolved rapidly in such little time, leaving room for so much fitness innovation on the way. Here are just a few concepts that may come to fruition:
  • Virtual Personal Training
  • Home-Fitness Smart Machines
  • High-Tech Boutique Studios
  • Incorporated Meditation
  • HILIT (High-Intensity, Low Impact Training)
  • Customized Fitness Services
  • Live Stream Workouts
  • More Wearable Tech and Smart Clothing
