barber, bathrobe, bathroom

As a mom of two kids, the chances are, my hair is pretty much a mess 99.9% of the time. If it's not a mess, it is certainly not anything spectacular to look at. I honestly just do not have the time do anything fancy. Let alone a trip to a hair salon to get anything done. To top all that off, I have no idea how to honestly make my hair nice outside of the basics of a ponytail and a messy bun. So as a mom, I am going to share my go-to hair styling suggestions that you can do at home without having to call the hairdresser or break your bank. These should be simple enough that you can do them yourself without too much difficulty. I mean, if I am able to do them, you definitely should be able to, considering my terrible styling skills! So let's get started with my suggestions:

1. The Bun

This one is super simple to do and literally takes less than a minute to do. Basically, you make a ponytail then wrap that ponytail any sort of which way to make the bun. I know, I know, I'm terrible at explaining it which is why I suggest checking out the article Making the Perfect Ballet Bun to assist you in better understanding the bun making process. They have a step by step guide, including photos, that detail how to go about making a beautiful, yet simple, bun. Basically, you start with brushing, make a ponytail, twist the ponytail, then wrap it around to complete the bun. As I said, it's fairly simple and with a step by step guide at your disposal it should be able to achieve and shouldn't delay or cut into your busy schedule to make it. This is generally my go-to style, especially being in the South and when it is hot out!

2. Curls

If I'm going somewhere fancy, I generally do curls. It doesn't have to be anything fancy and generally, this only requires the use of a hairbrush and curling iron (which can be bought at a local beauty store or we recommend Brillance New York Hair tools). I always recommend washing your hair with a quality shampoo and conditioner, waiting for it to fully dry, brush it, and then begin using your curling iron to curl it in the fashion you would like. There are several types of curling irons on the market in different sizes. The variously sized curling irons will determine the size of your curls. The smaller the curling iron is in thickness, the small the curls will be. The thicker the curling iron's thickness is, the thicker they will be. If you have never curled your hair and need help, they have this great article, 7 Fast and Easy Ways to Curl Your Hair, which gives you tips to get your hair curled in just 10 minutes or less!

3. Straight

We covered curls, but what if your hair is already curly? Well, then you would probably want to straighten it. Again, this is an easy process that would only really need a hairbrush and a flat iron. Since I live in the South where we have high humidity, I add some frizz control products to my hair otherwise straightening it doesn't do much to help my case. If you choose to use fizz control products, apply them first and allow it to dry into your hair. You generally do not want to straighten your hair while it is wet or damp. Even though some flat irons say it is safe, the truth is that it could be damaging your hair. When you're ready, all you need to do is plug your flat iron in and do pieces of your hair at a time. Some flat irons have various temperature settings. Check your user manual to determine which heat setting is right for you. When you're ready, just slide the flat iron down each (small group) of hair strands until the desired level of straightness is achieved!

4. The Braid

I love braiding my hair. No, I cannot make the fancy braids, but a basic braid, I can rock. My secret? I wash my hair then braid it while it's still wet! For some reason, I seem to only be able to get a halfway decent braid by doing it that way than when trying to achieve it with dry hair. Weird right?! Well, if you're like me and are terrible at braiding, check out this How to Braid Your Hair on Your Own article that I found. What I love about the braid is that it keeps the hair out my face and generally I don't have a loose hair somewhere that is pulling at my scalp. On top of that, once my hair is fully dried, my hair tends to be wavy from the braid. I have thick hair so it also helps with the drying process. So, for me, it's like getting two hairstyles in one. I have a braid when wet, then a nice wavy look once dried and all I did was wash my hair and put it in a regular old braid!

5. Waves

Well, I gave a basic tutorial above about how I achieve my waves, but did you know there are different types of waves and different ways to achieve them? Seriously! Just take a look at the 25 Ways Of How To Make Your Hair Wavy article I found. It features a slideshow feature of various wave styles to choose from and a brief description of how to achieve each. Plus, they are all generally rather quick to achieve so you don't need to spend all day in the bathroom trying to perfect the look. Just keep a can of hairspray on hand to help "freeze" the style so you can enjoy it for the day and some styling tools to get the job done. A curling iron, flat iron, and a hairbrush should be all you really need to get wavy hair. Depending on the style you choose to do will determine what tool will be needed to achieve it.

Ultimately there are a TON of hairstyles out that do not include needing a hairdresser. Many are easy to achieve and you can find tutorials all over the internet from YouTube to Pinterest, to a quick Google Search. If you have just a few minutes to take a look at some, you will be able to accomplish a new look with minimal effort.  This will leave you feeling confident and ready to tackle the day while feeling great!
