Fast food has become a part of families lives over the years. The fast-food chains scattered all over the world and the tendency increases in a number of more restaurants all over. A study conducted in America, about American lifestyle, refers that 52 percent of the population finds economically easier to buy fast-food instead of opting for healthy menus.
The same research shows that one out of four eaters eats the same type of fast-food on a daily basis. Despite the reminders of health specialists and experts that fast-food is the worst creation for the human body, people still ignore it. This industry has been during the years being blamed for the children’s and adult’s obesity and as the cause of several medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and coronary.
Fast food wrote its way to the family’s homes more than six decades ago. The phenomenon of television was one of the things that brought these habits in people’s lives. For some, fast-food represents a nightmare in the family daily routine. For others, it saves them on the go need. Here are a few points of view of the advantages and disadvantages of fast-food.
Possible advantages
One of the prior advantages pointed is that fast food chains, over regular restaurants, save people time. In a digital era, too busy with working careers and
racing to achieve deadlines, it is imperative that all the rest adapts to this type of life. Moreover, it is hard to balance a working career with a personal life and a family with children. Some parents and career-based people rely on ordering food online to have it delivered for dinner. Among these, the children’s favorite burgers come along the way. People seek the easy when they are in a hurry. Fast-food saves their time.
You don’t need to cook it since it comes to you in a fast and delicious way. People love the choices of fast-food, either the healthy or not so healthy options. McDonald's is everywhere and has even launched
their door to door delivery service in many countries already. There are many other launching brands that present to people with several menu choices. So you don’t even need to go to the place, since you can just order it and wait for it to gets to your place, while you do other things, that do not involve cooking. It doesn’t eat your time and it is conveniently everywhere.
- Healthy options on the way
Nowadays, not only meat fans are able to eat in fast food chains. With the food priorities changing for many people, vegan and vegetarian options arise from the market. Also, chicken and turkey meat are more of a thing nowadays. Salads are, as well, options to many fast-food stands.
Being fast-food doesn’t necessarily mean it will be unhealthy.
Possible disadvantages
Family time among family and friends is being reduced due to the fast-food chains and the lifestyle of the 21st century. Spending quality time at a dining table is shortened if not lost. The experience of cooking becomes barely inexistent and sitting at the table to enjoy homemade food, or food that is going to be eaten with time is something that is passing by people.
- Unhealthy food and obesity
This is the most known disadvantage of fast-food. Even though the chains are offering healthy menus, the ingredients used in the food are based on sodium, fats and a huge amount of oil. In many released studies,
children who are obese were found eating burgers and fries most of the time. With the high sodium in fast-food obesity will come, alongside vascular diseases. Furthermore, sanitation has been pointed out as an issue in some fast-food establishments with workers reporting mishandling food preparation.
- Labor and environmental issues
Some establishments of fast-food are publicly known for hiring undocumented people and pay them low salaries. Not only they abuse employees, but they also create fake opportunities. Also, there have been many scandalous reports on how animals are treated in slaughterhouses. Fast-food chains are pointed to one of the reasons for the increasing demand for meat and poultry.
In conclusion, despite people being either against or pro-fast-food, the chains will continue to be an active part of citizens all over the world. It is up to each one of us to make the choice of our eating habits. In the end, though, it is possible to once or twice per month take the fast food getaway, if we keep having a balanced diet throughout the rest of our meals and most important: exercising often. At least you guarantee that the calories earned don’t go to waste.
