Looking to step up your Fitness Routine in 2020? Going to the gym to get in your steps on the Treadmill or Stairmaster may be a thing of the past...

With a shift towards a healthier society and competitive fitness, many are looking for ways to up the ante. What better way to prove your competitive spirit than with community drawn events and public competitions? Here are just a few that are gaining a lot of attention heading into this new year...

1. Marathon Training:

The running trend isn't going out of style. In 2019 the sub two-hour marathon became a reality. This broke the limitation of human capability and led to a whole new wave of competitive energy from runners around the world. The best thing about competitive running? You can do it at your own pace. From 5k's, 10k's and half marathons, you can slowly work up to qualifying for a marathon. Also, most races are sponsored by a responsible organization that donate a portion of proceeds towards a noble cause. Getting fit while contributing to charity? Definitely a combination worth signing up for!

2. HILIT Workouts:

HILIT or "High-Intensity Low-Impact Training" is quickly growing in popularity. Professional Trainer, Kenny Rosenzweigh, deems it to be a challenging way to workout with less strain on your body.

It's essentially an improvement from HIIT or "High-Intensity Interval Training." HIIT has proven to elevate your fitness skills but can be physically taxing on your body.

HILIT focuses on exercises where you never have both feet off the ground. That means no running, jumping or demanding impact. This includes beneficial exercises like Mountain Climbers and Inch Worming. All of the sweat and none of the frustration!

3. Obstacle Course Races:

Obstacle Course Races have become popular in recent years and the trends is only gaining more traction. They appeal to a new generation of competitors, with action-packed challenges involving ropes, tires, walls, mud pits, and slides. For many, this type of competition perpetuates a team-building type of spirit that you can't get elsewhere. It's not strictly about competition, but also about socializing and bonding with others over a mutual goal.

4. Virtual Cycling:

Cycling is a classic activity that has stood the test of the time. It's great for exerting energy without high impact on your body. However, outdoor cycling has its limitations such as climate. If you're unable to ride outside throughout the year you can now virtually train indoors. Many at-home bikes are designed with incredible virtual technology for a surreal experience. Local gyms also host Cycling Classes that are often free with membership. They're also competitive. Most technology allows you to compete amongst peers as well as some of the world's fastest competitors with unlimited maps and virtual amenities. Start by shopping for indoor cycling apps to see which is best for you.

5. Wearable Tracking:

There is no better way to test your limit than with state-of-the-art tracking. Whether you’re tracking your steps, distance covered, or calories burned, Smart-Technology has made it possible to track all of your progress. This breeds accountability and fuels competition. Use your Smartwatch to enter Running Competitions with your friends or sync it to your bike and compete virtually. Tracking can also monitor your sleep and set daily alerts for goal orientation.
