I homeschool my soon to be 9-year-old daughter. Generally, I rip out a variety of pages out of workbooks for my daughter to do for the various subjects, but the problem with that is my daughter does them out of order or worse, she loses them. I had been stapling the pages, but they just rip off and honestly, make it more difficult to work with depending on the page and tasks required from that page. So I was super excited about the binding machine. Since getting it in, I`ve been using it to make small daily workbooks for my daughter. No more ripped up pages. No more lost pages. This thing has been a "God send" for us!
The Marigold 19-hole Letter Size Comb Ring Binding Machine is super easy to use. Initially I thought there were no instructions, however, mine got hidden in the box and I didn`t even notice them until I was breaking the box down to go out in the trash. So they`re there for anyone who needs them; however, the machine is rather easy and I found I didn`t need the instructions. Here`s the basics of how to use the machine:
First: Align your paper to cut holes. While it says you can punch holes in up to 10 pages at a time; I found it works best to just do a few at a time. It`s just easier and a smoother punch with less risk of accidentally moving the pages and getting un-aligned holes (I have had bad experiences with that).
Second: Pull the handle forward until you hear the punching sound through the paper.
Third: Once you have punched holes in all the pages you want to bind, grab the spin and place it at the top where the "teeth" looking things are. Make sure to set them where the rings open from the top (see video).
Fourth: Once the spine is in place, push the handle backward (opposite direction from when you`re punching holes) in a slow motion. This will open the rings up. Be sure to leave the tips slightly curled. I find this helps keep the pages from flying off a bit better.
Fifth: Add your pages. Make sure the tips of the spine go through every hole of the page and that everything is aligned or it won`t turn very well.
Sixth (and last): Pull the handle forward, as if you were about to punch holes. This releases the hold on the spine. Your booklet is now ready!
It seems like a lot while reading, but it literally is just a few minute process and it honestly just depends on how many pages you are binding. This set comes with 1/4 inch spines so the books I can make with these are small. Of course, they have larger sized spines for bigger projects. There`s also covers for the front and back you can get to help protect your work as well.
As far as the machine goes it is sturdy, well built and well constructed. I had to put the handle on it as it came with it off, but it`s a 2-second fix. I just had to screw it into place. No tools were required for it. I was impressed with the quality, ease of use and overall function of the machine. I can definitely say I would recommend it.
