Before MTV became MTV, it was almost TV-1. As Robert Pittman, the network's co-creator, explained in a 1991 Los Angeles Times story, the name would've been a way to "[steal] a leadership position by claiming that everything else was secondary." Unfortunately, some other business must have had the same idea and already claimed TV-1 for itself. TV-M was available, which Pittman's team tweaked to MTV after another executive said it sounded catchier.
