sustainable decor option that improve your mood as well as the atmosphere in the house just by being there.
There are countless
flower delivery options that you can utilise if you want your room to be full of fresh flower arrangements, but what if you want something a little more unique? If you still want to incorporate flowers into your decor, it's best to use flowers in some sort of art and display that in your room instead. Things like glass pressed flowers, dried flower bouquets, and even lamps with pressed flowers inside the lap shades are great ideas along with so many other things that you can make at home or get online.
Keep reading to find out about some of these things!
Dried Flowers
You can get dried flowers from your local florist or order them online, and in some cases they’re even better that fresh flowers. While fresh floral arrangements only last for a week to ten days, but dried flowers last about a year when properly preserved.
The best part? You can dry flowers at home too. It takes a long time, but the results are worth it and blend in very well with darker interiors as well as more antique themes. They are also great for winter themed decor, and can add charm to a warm and cozy living room with a lot of dark wooden textures.
To dry flowers, tie them up with a rubber band (the rubber band is important because the flower stems will shrink as they they dry, and you need something that will still hold the flowers together when that happens), and hang them upside down in a dark room with good ventilation to allow the flowers to dry.
You hang the flowers upside down so the flower stems remain “upright” when they dry, and the dark is important to make sure the flowers retain their color. It will darken, but will not fade in the right circumstances. After about two weeks, you can take the flowers or the arrangement and spray it with hairspray to preserve the flowers. Now it’s ready to be displayed in your home.
Glass Pressed Flowers
Another great way to display flowers in your home is to put them in glass and display those in eyecatching arrangements on tables and on walls.
In order to make glass pressed flowers, you actually need to press the flowers and dry them up inside a book or two flat, weighted objects. In a few days, the flower will be flat and completely dried. Now is the time to place the flower in between two sheets of clear glass and add a frame, which is the easier part of the whole process. If you want, you can add other things in between the glass to make collages and interesting glass art that can be viewed from all angles.
This can include other, smaller flowers like dried baby’s breath, leaves, twigs, smaller flowers, ribbons, drawings, old newspaper clippings, quotes, glitter, and anything else that can fit between two sheets of glass.
Floral Wall Art
If glass pressed flowers aren't something you like, or if you feel like you need something less breakable, think about creating some wall art in the same way. You can incorporate dried flowers in paintings, collages, drawings, and even put glass pressed flowers in a photo frame against the right background.
You can add a black or brown background against dried red roses with the leaves and thorns intact for a very gothic piece, or choose daisies or lilies against pastel hues with some small white flowers for a cheerful and colorful piece of art that stands out against white backgrounds.
You can even get creative with the background, using things like washi tape, paper cutouts, paint, and meaningful texts.
Another great idea would be to make wall art where a memorable photo takes up half of the frame, and the other half is taken up by the dried flower art. You can also even make a
whole flower wall, and so much more if you think about it!
Homemade Candles
If you already use candles around the home, you can now start making your own. All you need is some organic wax, essential oils if you want the candles to be scented, dried flowers, cotton wick, and something to hold the wick up while the candle dries (you can even use a pencil). You’ll also need a glass container - even simple glass cups will do.
Once you dry the wax properly and have added the essential oils (and any color you want - though we would suggest keeping the candle natural or lightly colored if you want the flowers to stand out), pour the wax inside the glass container while being careful to keep the flowers to the side of the container.
You can do this by using some melted wax and using it to stick the flowers to the side of the glass and waiting for that wax to dry before you pour the rest of your candle. Just a dab of wax will do to stick your flowers to the side.
Suncatchers
Suncatchers are beautiful ornaments that can be hung outside in place of windchimes for a beautiful visual effect. All you need to do is take a piece of reflective glass that you feel is the right size, an old CD (if you still have those!), reflective beads, a frame, and a hook or a keyring. The basic purpose is to make something that either reflects light or let’s you see through it to make the sunlight look better. You also need dried flowers, of course.
Once you have everything, it’s you and your imagination against the world. Take the plastic frame (or one you made yourself with cardboard or by recycling old plastic with some superglue) and stick string across it. You can put reflective beads and the bits of CD you got on the strings as well as the flowers. Now, paint whatever parts of the suncatcher you wish to color, stick the key ring on it, and it’s ready to be hung up.
