As you all know, if you have been following my blog and social media, we just went through Hurricane Ida. I say went through, but we are still recovering. You see, this review was going to be a standard review, but let me explain and you will see why I fell in love with
Winc Wine just a bit more after my experience – on a personal level.
I partnered up with Winc wine for a review. I was too excited about this wine and trying them out and sharing my experience. The wine arrived literally a day or two before we realized we would be evacuated to safety from
Hurricane Ida. If you have seen my previous blog posts, you know the details of the storm so I can spare re-sharing that here.
During this time, when I realized we were leaving, I started making contact with various advertisers I was working with or fixing to work with to inform them of what was going on. Even when we planned on staying, when we expected only a tropical storm and, at worst, a category 2 storm, I knew we would lose power. With
Hurricane Zeta, we lost power for about a day and a half. Obviously, this was not the case with Ida. I just got back power on September 5
th, which is lucky compared to others, and when my estimated time of it coming back on was September 8
th.
When reaching out to Winc about what was going on and that there would be delays in my review and no current ETA, I was amazed by how caring that team was. They were concerned about my safety and wanted to ensure me there was no rush. During this time, I also did not know if I would even have a home to come to. Winc’s response? They would re-send me the wine when everything was safe! They felt like an extended family to me during this time. Not just another business trying to get their name out there.
So, while I do love trying new things and sharing my product experience, I had to take a moment to share how amazing this company has been on a personal level. Their wine is amazing, but the empathy I experienced from them means so much more and is enough of a reason to recommend them.
Now with all that said, do you know how hard it was to not start drinking the wine as soon as I got back? The only reason I didn’t is that we’re under a boil water advisory (even still as I write this) and had no electricity. So I was limited to resources to rehydrate. We joke and play with alcohol, but under these circumstances, I try to play it smart. Since the power came back on, though, time to drink! I may not have internet as I write this up (Well, obviously it's back now that this is live), but I am itching to get back to work and feel like I am doing something. So here I am – getting started on some much-needed wine and giving you my play-by-play as I go with them!
Fun fact for all my gulf coast friends –
red wine does not need to be refrigerated! Although some may prefer it, so during hurricane weather, it’s ready to go for you! For that very reason, that is why I started off drinking the
2020 Alma Libra Carménère from Valle Central, Chile. I had this wine before and specifically mentioned I am a fan of wine from Chile. Not sure why, but it hits right with my taste buds. They sent me two bottles of this so I will be doing well as we get through this storm and was perfect to sip as I got back to work!
This wine is from a Fair Trade vineyard in Chile featuring notes of black pepper and dark fruit. The word Alma Libra translates into free spirit in Spanish and is the perfect description of this bold red wine. Carménère is the signature red grade in Chile, so much so, that there’s even a day devoted to it!
For this wine, the grapes come from a Fair Trade vineyard with a very particular black clay soil that encourages optimal ripening. This is a punchy, food-friendly red wine that is enjoyable to drink. Look for a nose of bell pepper and coffee, with spicy black pepper and bright berry fruit on a palate! This pair perfectly with pizza, Mexican, cured meats, and BBQ!
Up next on the list was the
Summer Water 2020 Rosé. This was perfect to share with my neighbor as we celebrated getting our electricity back! This one is nationally recognized and is a favorite across the U.S. It is dry, light, and crisp with notes of strawberry, pink grapefruit, and white peach. This one is recommended to drink chilled and trust me, with this Southern heat, this wine is refreshing!
The grapes for this wine were picked early to achieve a natural acidity that’s ideal for warm-weather drinking. To ensure as little extraction from the skins as possible, they used the direct press method, retaining the delicate fruit aromas and pale color Rosé is known for. Light dishes such as shellfish, ceviche, sushi, cheeses, fries, and salads will pair perfectly, or just drink it anytime!
The final wine I was sent was the
2019 Yé-Yé Carignane. This Carignane is sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards and isn’t harvested until October. This long hang time gives these grapes time for their tannins to ripen, making this sometimes-burly grape far more approachable. You can expect bold aromas and flavors of red fruit and spice with an elegant finish. This goes perfectly with burgers, cheeses, cured meats, and veggies.
This one I enjoyed while I finally got to relax. It's been a crazy week, but this was perfect to wind down to!
Needless to say, each wine was unique and tasted fabulous! When I say these wines could not have arrived at a better time – I mean it! From being packaged carefully to ensure they arrived in perfect condition, to above and beyond customer service, to high-quality wines – Winc is a must for any wine lover! I will definitely be back as a regular customer as soon as life gets a bit more back to normal around here!
